The unlacquered bell, even though it has no Kranz, is made of a single piece of brass, with a long seam running its full length. Examining them both closer, revealed a significant difference. Interesting enough, I would have thought the lacquered version would have been more to my liking. It has a bit more punch in the sound than the other one and is slightly better in tune. My favorite of the twoĪfter playing them back to back for a while, I decided that I preferred the earlier unlacquered version. Although it looks more aesthetically pleasing than the 101, this model tends to not have as much power or resonance as the former model although unless you played them side by side, you might not notice it. The B&S model 102s were the late 1970s redesigned version of the 101 BBbs with a more modern value tubing design and a couple other details including many smaller parts being made with hydraulics and thinner bracing. At first glance they look quite similar, almost identical in fact, but if you look a bit closer there are some interesting differences. Both of them were built in the early 1980s within a year of each other.

The later versions were rounded off.Ĭonsidering that I am based in north east Germany, I figured an old 102/103 would fit the bill especially considering how you can’t a rock without hitting one and also how similar they were to the PT3 CC Tuba which I play myself. A bit sharper edged than I prefer, but still comfy enough. Basically the options are usually an old Bohland&Fuchs, Alexander 163, Miraphone 186, Hirsbrunner 390 or a B&S/Weltklang 101/102 BBb or even one of the many small custom makers of the 20th century. When looking for such tubas, I think most of you reading this know my tastes extend to older horns. a good patina does hide dents…just sayin. I just wish it had more oomph and power when you really step on it. As good as the CC sounds, I do like the extra gruntyness of the BBb when its cranked up. Having said all that, perhaps it’s possible to get a smaller BBb to perform as well as my old faithful B&S CC Tuba.
They usually lack the power or resonance of their 5/4 brethern yet are not as nimble as a similarily sized CC Tuba or F Tuba. I will plan to start in Jan 2021, but I need to do some research and überlegung before I begin.Īs previously mentioned in other blog posts, I was never the biggest fan of 4/4 BBb tubas.
